Justin Gurland is the Founder and CEO of The Maze, New York City’s first alcohol-free members club, redefining how people connect, socialize, and build community without alcohol at the center.
Sober for 18 years, Justin is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with more than 15 years of experience working in the substance use and recovery field. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with individuals and families navigating addiction, helping them rebuild their lives through connection, structure, and support.
His work is grounded in a simple belief: connection is at the core of lasting change. Over time, he saw a consistent gap – while many people were seeking sobriety or more mindful ways of living, there were few spaces designed to support connection without alcohol as the focal point. That insight became the foundation for The Maze.
With The Maze, Justin has translated his clinical and personal experience into a new kind of social environment – one that brings together dining, thoughtfully curated programming, and a strong sense of community. His approach blends structure with creativity, creating a space where members can return regularly, build relationships, and feel a genuine sense of belonging.
As the sober-curious movement continues to gain momentum, Justin is helping to shape a broader cultural shift around how people gather and engage. Through The Maze, he is building a model that extends beyond hospitality – one that prioritizes consistency, connection, and purpose, and reflects a more modern, inclusive approach to social life.
Dan Brody is the SVP of Membership Experience at The Maze, where he leads member experience, engagement, and community development. He plays a hands-on role in shaping the community, working closely with each prospective member throughout the application process and fostering meaningful connections once they join. His approach is highly personal, ensuring that each member feels seen, supported, and connected from the moment they enter the space.
Sober for 5 years, Brody’s path to recovery was not linear. After growing up in New Jersey with a strong foundation and identity rooted in athletics, he struggled with substance use following the loss of structure after college. What once felt like a source of confidence and connection ultimately became unsustainable.
His commitment to recovery marked a turning point, with community playing a central role in that transformation. Through connection and consistency, he found a renewed sense of purpose – one that continues to guide his work today.
At The Maze, Brody brings both personal experience and professional insight to his role, helping to cultivate a community defined by trust, accountability, and belonging.
Steph Malove brings a rare blend of warmth, intention, and expertise to her role as head of membership at The Maze NYC. With a background spanning luxury hospitality, lifestyle curation, and psychology, Steph has spent her career building communities where people feel genuinely seen and connected – from founding EVOLVd Studios, her luxury brand and lifestyle curation business, to leading end-to-end membership strategy at Continuum Club. She has a gift for identifying the right people, crafting the right experiences, and fostering the kind of relationships that make a community truly come alive. She believes that the most meaningful spaces are built on human insight as much as exceptional service, and that philosophy is at the heart of everything she brings to The Maze.
The Maze holds a deeply personal place in Steph’s heart. As a member of Al-Anon and someone who has witnessed firsthand the impact of substance abuse within her own family, she understands the profound need for spaces that complement more traditional paths to recovery – places that feel joyful, elegant, and vibrant, without the weight of the morning after. For Steph, The Maze isn’t just a members’ club. It’s proof that community, connection, and a truly great night out don’t require alcohol to be extraordinary.
Taryn Weiss brings a thoughtful blend of operational expertise, hospitality experience, and community-driven leadership to her role at The Maze NYC, where she oversees operations, events, programming, and the overall member experience. She also played a key role in the development and buildout of The Maze’s Flatiron space, helping shape both the physical environment and the experience from the ground up.
Prior to joining The Maze, Taryn was the first employee at Chief, the membership network for executive women, where she helped scale the company from its earliest stages into a nationally recognized brand and community. Beginning in events and programming, she went on to lead space expansion and operations across six major cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, and Washington, D.C.
At the core of Taryn’s work is a belief that thoughtfully designed spaces and meaningful programming can foster genuine connection and community. At The Maze, she brings that philosophy to life through experiences designed to make people feel welcomed, engaged, and deeply connected.
